The car is being built to celebrate 40 years since Frank Bullitt,  made an instant classic out of McQueen's car, a 1968 Mustang GT in Dark Highland Green - this colour and black are the only colours offered on the new car.

Based on the standard Mustang GT, the Bullit, the 4.6-litre V8 offers a 15bhp and 5lb/ft increase, thanks to a new cold-air intake and a revised exhaust. The exhaust has been specially tuned, using a remastered print of the film to match the new car's sound to that of the McQueen car. Ford is claiming that the power boost, along with a unique 3.73:1 rear axle ratio, is enough to cut the 0-60mph dash by three-tenths of a second. A front strut brace, revised suspension, more powerful brakes and unique 18-inch alloys should help counteract some of the more wayward characteristics of that live rear axle.

The power is fed in traditional Mustang style to a to the rear wheels but rather than a slushbox, the Bullitt received a five-speed Tremec manual, the lever topped with a machined aluminium gearknob. The metallic theme continues with an aluminium centre console, air vent and gauge surrounds and pedals. Inside and out the Mustang pony emblem has disappeared, replaced with an unadorned honeycomb grille up front and at the rear and on the steering wheel boss with a badge with the 'Bullitt' name inside a stylised gunsight.
